Completed Projects

  • September 17, 2017: Compassionate City workshop at Women and Spirituality Conference October 22, 2017:
  • Journey of Peace VIII at Assisi Heights: Weaving Compassion workshop invited people of all faiths and cultures to experience diverse practices of compassion for the purpose of weaving health and peace in our fractured world October, 2017:
  • Rochester Public Library provided Compassion Reading list suggestions for all ages which has been made into a Compassionate Rochester MN pamphlet.
  • October 2nd and November 6th, 2017: Sponsored the movie "Walk With Me", a journey into mindfulness based on Thich Nhat Hanh's early journals, for a community showing through Gathr Films.
  • November 7, 2017: The UMR Connects Free Professional Speaker Series held a panel discussion on compassion and the city's next steps.
  • December 10, 2017: Participation in the Rochester Muslim Community Circle multi-faith Journey of Peace event.
  • December 13, 2017:  Cathy Ashton receives the Mayors Medal of Honor for Humanitarian Services for her work creating Rochester a Compassionate City through the international Charter for Compassion .

 

On Going Projects

  • Outreach into the community via a Listening Tour with elected officials, community agencies, religious and spiritual communities and educational institutions
  • Member presence at community meetings and events
  • Design and launch of the Compassionate Rochester MN website  
  • Monthly Compassionate Rochester lunch meet & greet at Mt Olive Church beginning in February, 2018
  • A second ongoing monthly compassionate Rochester lunch meet & greet at RCTC is planned for February, 2018
  • Joint summer compassion event with 125 Live seniors and RNeighbors children and families
  • Environmental projects in conjunction with the Earthfest Committee and the Chester Woods volunteer group
  • A summer program offering at Assisi Heights Spirituality Center
  • Further collaborative meetings with the post-secondary education community in Rochester including RCTC, UMR, Winona State and St. Mary's
  • Partnership with RCTC as RCTC develops and signs their own Compassion Charter
  • Assist Winona MN as they pursue exploring becoming a Compassionate City
  • Develop and maintain a calendar of events on the Compassionate Rochester MN website
  • Encourage individual sign-up and Partners in the community that affirm the Charter for Compassion in the sectors of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Healthcare, Peace and Nonviolence, Religion/Spirituality/Interfaith, Restorative Justice, Science and Research, Social Injustice, Social Services or Women and Girls.
  • Increase the Charter's role and effectiveness as a network by hosting events, trainings, conference calls and providing forums for resource exchange

About Beam

Community Beam (dmcbeam.org) is a registry of private and public resources (organizations, projects, initiatives, programs) that underpin economic and social developments of greater Rochester:

  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
